This beautiful passage rolls across the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains with grand vistas to the west and the Empire Mountains to the east. Mount Wrightson dominates the south, while views of the majestic Rincon Mountains to the north foretell adventures ahead.
Cactus Singletrack Heaven
The geology is dramatic and beautiful, and this passage is popular among equestrians, mountain bikers, and trail runners. The Arizona National Scenic Trail (AZT) through Cienega Creek Nature Preserve is open to all nonmotorized users.
The Sonoran Desert comes alive at night, and an experience along the AZT wouldn’t be complete without a hike or mountain bike ride under the full moon.
The entire passage provides excellent, moderate singletrack.
As with the other passages on the Arizona National Scenic Trail (AZT) that traverse sky islands, this section presents difficulties because of its extreme elevation ranging from 3,500 feet up to 8,500 feet, and the climate that comes with it. It’s hard to believe temperatures at the top of the mountain are 20 degrees cooler than in the valley. Hikers should also be prepared for strenuous trail miles.
